Lonavala by Train: What to Do When You Get Off at Malavli or Lonavala

The Pune–Lonavala local is one of the cheapest good days out in Maharashtra. Under a hundred rupees return, roughly ninety minutes each way, and it drops you within walking distance of two of the best sights in the region. Here is how to actually plan it.

Get off at Malavli, not Lonavala

This is the single most useful thing to know. Malavli, one stop before Lonavala, is the station for the Karla and Bhaja caves and for Lohagad fort. Most first-time visitors ride all the way to Lonavala and then double back by road, which wastes an hour and a fair bit of money.

From Malavli station

• Bhaja Caves — about 2 km, an easy walk or a short auto ride. Rock-cut Buddhist viharas and chaityas from around the 2nd century BCE, with a set of waterfalls beside them that are spectacular in the monsoon.
• Lohagad Fort — roughly 6 km from the station via Bhaja, then a stepped climb. Allow three to four hours in total. The fortified spur known as Vinchu Kata is worth the extra twenty minutes.
• Karla Caves — on the other side of the highway, about 5 km. The great chaitya hall here is the largest of its kind in India, and it is genuinely worth the trip on its own.

Staying on to Lonavala

Lonavala town itself is the base for the softer version of the day:

• Bhushi Dam — 6 km from the station, and the classic monsoon spot. Very crowded on weekends between July and September, and the water can rise fast — take that seriously.
• Tiger's Leap and Lion's Point — viewpoints over the ghats, best in the late afternoon.
• Rajmachi Point — walkable from town.
• Chikki — the shops around the station have sold it for generations. Buy it on the way back, not the way out.

Practical notes

• Go early. The 06:30 and 08:05 from Pune are the two that make a full day possible. Anything after 10:00 and you are fighting the crowds.
• Sit on the right going up from Pune for the better ghat views after Kamshet.
• Monsoon is the season — and also when the rocks are slick and the waterfalls are dangerous. Proper shoes, and do not climb anything you would not climb dry.
• Carry water and cash. Signal is unreliable past Kamshet and many small stalls are cash only.
• Know your last train back. The last services towards Pune leave late, but the gap between the evening trains is long. Missing one costs you an hour.
