About Pune Junction station
Pune Junction is the southern terminus of the Lonavala local and, by a wide margin, the busiest station on the line. It is a major junction of the Central Railway, handling long-distance trains towards Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru and Howrah alongside the suburban EMUs. Nearly every Lonavala local begins its run here, which has one practical consequence worth knowing: this is the only station on the route where you can be reasonably confident of getting a seat.
The station dates to the middle of the nineteenth century and has grown outward rather than been rebuilt, so the layout rewards a little familiarity. Suburban services generally use the platforms towards the Pune city end, and if you are changing from a long-distance train that has come in at the far end, allow several minutes to cross. The main concourse can be slow to move through during the evening peak.
What is nearby
- Pune Metro's Purple Line connects at Pune Railway Station, giving direct access to Shivajinagar, the Civil Court interchange and Swargate
- PMPML city buses and the main auto and taxi ranks are immediately outside the main entrance
- Booking counters, ATVMs and smart card top-up points are all in the main hall
- Retiring rooms, waiting rooms and left luggage are available on the concourse
- The Koregaon Park, Camp and MG Road areas are a short auto ride away
Worth knowing before you travel
Because almost every service originates here, boarding at Pune Junction rather than Shivajinagar is worth the extra few minutes on a weekend morning in the monsoon, when trains towards Lonavala fill completely by the time they leave the city.
When the station is busy
The busiest departures are the early morning services towards Lonavala and the evening arrivals from Pimpri-Chinchwad. Between about 11:00 and 15:00 the suburban platforms are comparatively quiet.
